Plot

Austrian mountaineer Heinrich Harrer, the world champion, who has bad relationships with his young wife, decides to conquer the Himalayas in 1933. He is directed by Nazis who asserts that taming of mountain peak will be a personal gift to the Fuhrer. Harrer is sure that he’ll be able to do it. When the group passes the ridge, the war starts and mountaineers find themselves in enemy territory.

The British put the whole group in a camp for political prisoners. Harrer tries to escape every six months. He is quiet egoistic person: he doesn’t want to get help from other prisoners and prefers to be a staunch individualist. But soon his self-confidence runs out and Harrer decides to escape with some other guys. They dress up as security guards and local residents, escape from the camp and go to Tibet. Peter Aufschnaiter and Heinrich come to Lhasa – the capital of Tibet. Foreigners must not enter the territory of the country, so local citizens refuse to accept the guests. But fugitives have no other way. They stay in Lhasa and become the first Europeans who get an audience with Lama himself. Lama meets with Harrer, asks him about the various technical innovations, distributed in Europe. Aufschnaiter meanwhile, marries a pretty dressmaker, and starts a family life.

Heinrich and Peter faces another traditions, they get to know everything about this amazing culture:

Dalai Lama: We have a saying in Tibet: If a problem can be solved there is no use worrying about it. If it can't be solved, worrying will do no good.

Time passes but the war doesn’t stop. China tries to conquer Tibet. Harrer runs back to Europe but find out that his wife has another husband…

Though Harrer dreamt to come back to Europe, life in Tibet has left indelible mark in his memory.
